    C. LISTENING

Before You Listen Work with a partner. Study the pictures and answer the questions.

    1. They’re talking on the phone.

    2. They would say “Hello” to greet each other.

    3. I think they would talk aboul their usual jobs and things happening to them.

    4. It would take them about five minutes to finish their calls because they are on the move in the street.

    While You Listen

    2. A reasonable length of time for a call is the main problem. T

    3. Ten minutes is a reasonable length of time for a call.T

    4. Young people should not receive a call at dinner time T

    5. Young people often call their friends at night. T

    6. You can’t call your friends at any time even when you have a separate telephone T

The telephone, as you know, is a marvelous instrument, but it may cause arguments between you and your parenls-arguments that could be easily avoided if you would sit down, talk it over and agree to a few simple regulations.

The most obvious problem, of course, is what everyone considers a reasonable length of time for a call. The exact duration must be worked out with your parents, but ten minutes should be an absolute maximum. That’s certainly long enough to say almost anything in five different ways, and yet it isn’t so long that other members of the family will become apoplectic. Even when your parents are out, the length of your call should be limited, because they, or someone else, may he trying to reach your home for a very important reason.

Calling hours should be agreed upon. If your parents object to your leaving the dinner table to take calls, tell your friends to avoid calling at that hour, if someone does phone, ask him to call back, or offer to call him when dinner’s over.

A serious calling problem is calling very late at night, or very early on weekend mornings. This particular mistake is made mostly by young people who consider 10 or 11 pm. when a lot of tired adults are happily sleeping, the shank of the evening.

So please tell your friends not lo call after ten o’clock. The shock of waking out of a sound sleep and the fright of that instant thought – “There’s an accident” – are enough to give your parents a heart attack. Weekend morning calls aren’t so startling but it’s the one time your parents can sleep late.

If your mother and father, out of kindness, have installed a separate phone for you, remember that you’re still a member of a family. So try to stick to your family’s regulations. That’s all for my talk today. Thank you lor listening.

Task 2: Listen to part of Ms Linda Cupple’s talk again and write the missing words.

Calling hours should be (1) ………upon. If your parents object to your leaving the dinner table to take calls, tell your friends (2)………….calling at that hour; if someone does phone, ask him to call back, or offer to call him when dinner’s over.

    1. aereed 2. to avoid 3. particular 4. adults

    2. waking 6. heart 7. kindness 8. to stick

The first is to work out a reasonable length of time for a call after a discussion with our parents, usually ten minuies at most. And it’s the duration of time for receiving or making a call at the usual time. Next, it’s a great problem to make a call very late at night or early in the morning, particularly on weekends, because it’s the time your parents can sleep late. So even you have a separate phone, try to stick to the family’s regulations

Everyone should have a right to make decisions for his / her own, especially the one relating to his /her personal life. In the other hand, he / she determines and chooses his / her spouse freely. We love something whenever we know and understand it well. The more we know (something), the more we like (it).

    G. Personally, it’s not our traditional culture. Our personal feelings may not be performed in public. I mean in front of other people, except for appropriate or necessary circumstances.

    – I’m’ good at Maths and Physics.

    – Certainly I enjoy Maths and Physics most as they are my favourite subjects. I find them interesting because these subjects relate to all things which happen in my life and the nature, for example the rule of expansion of solid substances,…

The subject I enjoy least is, to tell the truth, political education. At my age I think I cannot understand any concepts or thoughts on it. Therefore I find it very boring. What ideologies or political doctrines mean is nothing to our little mind.

The current formal school education in Vietnam consists of three levels : pschool. primary and secondary educations. Now there are two school systems in pschool and primary education in big cities : stale and private schools. In state schools, parents have to pay tuition fee. The academic year, from September to May, is pided into two semesters:, from four to live months each.

Children usually start the p-school at the age of 3, when they go to nurseries, but this stage is not compulsory. When children reach the age of 6, they must go to primary schools. The primary education last five years. When they complete their primary education, they can go to secondary schools, including Lower and Upper schools, from Grade 6 to 12. However, children must pass a recruitment exam at the end of Grade 9, the final year of Lower schools, to enter the upper secondary education. They will stay there until they complete Grade 12. Al the end of this stage, they must take the National Examination for GCSE, the requirement to go to university or college. This examination often takes place at the end of May or early June.

The party began at about three in the afternoon. There were about twenty of us gathering in Mars house. She didn’t like having the party at a restaurant because it is noisy and expensive.

We gave psents to Mai and she happily opened them. It must really be exciting to receive all those psents. After that Mai’s mother served us soft drinks and biscuits. We then listened to music and played cards. The winners were given prizes. At about four thirty Mai’s mother brought out the birthday cake. It was beautifully decorated with pink and white icing. Sixteen colourful candles sat in the middies of the cake. We all clapped our hands eagerly and sang “Happy Birthday” as she blew out the candles and cut the cake. We helped ourselves to slice of the delicious cake and sang all the songs that we knew.

Finally at about six in the evening the party came to an end. We were all tired but happy. The parents of other children came to collect them by motorbikes. I helped Mai and her mother clean up the mess we had made. After that I walked home, which was only three doors away.

Task 2. Listen again and answer the following questions.

… So, it is not easy for a high school student to find a job in the United States.

… Next, let us look at some of the recent changes in the US job market and see if we can make some pdictions for future jobs.

A good way to begin is to look at the American work force and how it is changing. The most important change has been the shift from manufacturing jobs to service jobs.

Manufacturing jobs are jobs in which people make something or produce things. For example, people produce cars. Service jobs are those in which workers provide service, or we may say, they do something, like washing people’s cars. Generally, service jobs are grouped into five categories:

    One: Transportation companies

    Two: Wholesale companies

    Three: Retail companies

    Four: Finance companies

Five: Personal service, such as hotels, cars repair, accounting, education and medicine

Now the point here is that people have changed from manufacturing jobs to service jobs. For example, one hundred years ago, 80% of workers produced goods, today only 30% do. Economists pdict that by the year 2022, nine out of every ten workers will supply service.

    Ex 1:

There are many kinds of music in the world but I love country music most. First, this type of music is traditional and very popular in Vietnam. We can easily listen to it on radio, TV, CDs or on the Internet. Second, country music helps me relax. For example, when I feel stressed or tired, I always listen to my favourite songs. It makes me feel more comfortable. Third, country music can connect people together. In a party, especially in the countryside, people often get together and sing a popular song of this type. In today’s pvailing electronic music industry, I think country music will still have its own place because of its inherent simplicity.

    Ex 2:

We are the world’ is a song and charity single originally recorded by Supergroup USA for Africa in 1985. It was written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie for the album ‘We are the world’. I like ‘We are the world’ because it has a smoothy melody. Whenever I listen to it, I feel comfortable and peaceful.

Nó được viết bởi Michael Jackson và Lionel Richie cho album ‘We are the world’. Tôi thích ‘We are the world’ vì nó có giai điệu mượt mà.
